City Mafia rules

Objective of the game

  • There are two teams in the game — mafia and townspeople. The mafia wins if it remains in the majority or if there's an equal number of townspeople and mafia. The townspeople win if they eliminate all the mafiosi.

  • Roles and teams. The mafia knows each other and eliminates players at night. Townspeople don't know anyone and try to figure out who the mafia are.

How the game goes

  • 1. Dealing rolesThe host secretly deals out the cards.

  • 2. Night phaseAll special game roles take their actions.

  • 3. Day phaseDiscussion and a vote against a player.

  • 4. Win conditionsMafia wins on equal numbers or superiority, townspeople win by eliminating the mafia.

Role descriptions

Roles are added as the number of players increases.

Sheriff — every night checks one player to see if they're mafia or not. A thumbs up from the host means an innocent player, thumbs down means mafia. The werewolf will show up as innocent until they turn into mafia.

Doctor — every night chooses one player to heal. Can heal themselves once per game. The same player cannot be healed two nights in a row.

Hitman — plays for themselves alone, kills at night, and can kill mafia too. To win, must end up one-on-one with any other remaining player.

Courtesan — chooses a player to "invite over to her place," thereby saving them from death. If the Courtesan herself is shot that night, both die — the Courtesan and the player she was protecting.

Detective — every night checks one player for a role. A thumbs up means an innocent player with no role, a horizontal gesture means the player holds any of the active roles.

Werewolf — plays for the town. As soon as the first mafioso is voted out or killed, the werewolf transforms and becomes mafia: from then on wakes up together with them. Every night the host wakes the Werewolf — a thumbs up means they haven't turned yet, thumbs down means they've become mafia.

Important

  • Don't show your role card to other players and don't discuss what it looks like — even if you've already been eliminated from the game.
  • You can say whatever you want. You only look at your card once per game.
  • During the night phase all players stay silent. Any gestures are forbidden while you're wearing a mask.
  • Dead players stay silent and ignore any questions.
  • Whatever happens in the game, stays in the game. Oaths and promises are punished with a strike.
  • During the night phase all roles are called out — regardless of whether that character is still in the game or has been eliminated.

Players have their own inside jargon. Red players — town roles: townsperson, sheriff, doctor, detective, and the werewolf before turning. Black players — roles with the ability to shoot: mafia and hitman.

Strike — a penalty system for breaking the rules or interfering with other players.

  1. A warning.
  2. The player loses their right to vote at the next voting.
  3. The player can't talk to others until they solve a puzzle from the host.
  4. Removal from the game.
